COMPETITION I FREEDOM MEMORIAL MUSEUM
“ While beautiful, our freedom is built on a foundation of courage in the face of persecution, unity despite deception, and the memories of our lost brothers and sisters, all held together by a fragile hope for the future. Spacefabrik's entry for the "Freedom Memorial Museum" explores the journey of remembrance, healing, and the path to reconciliation.“
FREEDOM MEMORIAL MUSEUM
LOCATION | QUEZON CITY
STATUS | DESIGN COMPETITION - UNBUILT
Our main concept arose from the effects of the various atrocities committed with impunity during the Martial Law Era towards Filipinos. We are still suffering the effects of that regime and many of us have not found closure or understood its consequences.
The first building houses the Main Lobby and the first part of the Gallery of Remembrance. One of the functions of the first building is to evoke a sense of solemnity.
The second structure is the Main Axis or the Wound, an open passage which connects the two galleries. From above, it appears as a gash that separates the site into two parts and is pointing towards Malacanang. This is an admonition to the government to be responsible for any action it takes that affects the nation.
The third structure is the second part of the Gallery of Remembrance. It is vertically connected to the community and administrative facilities such as the library, cafe and auditorium.
In the near end experience, they are rewarded by the promise of a future of freedom which is represented by an open square, the Forum of Reconciliation, and the towering spire called the Pillar of Reflection. The tower is a freeform structure made of three undulating petals that symbolize the three main islands of the Philippines. The perforations are meant to represent that 11,000 victims because of the void they left in our society. They are lost but they left behind their light to guide us.
